KPM: How to score KPM Spelling?

Please download and review the scoring guidelines for the Circle Kindergarten Progress Monitoring (KPM, formerly Texas Kindergarten Entry Assessment) measures. These documents provide measure-specific scoring rules, examples, and administration guidance for available assessment waves: beginning of year (BOY), middle of year (MOY), and end of year (EOY), as applicable.
For KPM spelling, students should write all the sounds they hear in each word. The words become increasingly challenging as the school year progresses. Scoring is based on conventional spelling rules rather than developmental spelling approaches because the validation study found this approach produced more reliable scores.
The KPM Written Spelling subtest does not measure handwriting. Students are not expected to demonstrate conventional handwriting at the beginning of kindergarten. Written letters only need to be recognizable to be scored as correct. Letter approximations and common reversals may be scored as correct; the guiding principle is to give students credit when a letter is a recognizable attempt.
