Because dyslexia and related disorders can significantly affect a student’s learning experience, Texas law ensures that all students—regardless of their primary language—receive appropriate support.
Under Texas Education Code §38.003, all students enrolled in public schools must be screened for dyslexia and related disorders at designated times, regardless of their primary language.
Who is screened?
All students in kindergarten and first grade must be screened using a program approved by the State Board of Education.When is the deadline?
Kindergarten students must be screened at the end of the school year.
First-grade students must be screened no later than January 31 of each school year.
Districts are required to follow procedures outlined in the Dyslexia Handbook and report screening data through the Texas Student Data System (TSDS/PEIMS) to ensure compliance.
