CPM: What do the Circle Progress Monitoring Coloring-Coded Benchmarks mean?
Answer
Circle Progress Monitoring (CPM) benchmarks are age dependent. CPM assigns an age group as of September 1st of the current school year, and students stay in that age group for the entire school year. For example, a student who is 3.8 years old when school starts will be in the 3.5 to 4.0 years age group and will stay in that age group during the entire school year.
CPM provides color-coding benchmarks to identify children at risk for academic difficulties. If sufficient data is collected to identify a benchmark for the child’s age range, the shade of color presented indicates if it is a formal benchmark (dark shade) or an informal benchmark (light shade). While formal benchmarks (the dark shade) are scientifically identified through comparisons of sufficiently sized data sets, informal benchmarks, (light shades), are not identified through an examination of data but represent CPM recommendations that can be used to guide instructional decision-making.
Some measures do not have a full range of formal benchmarks. This is because a sufficient sample size has not been collected to date to set benchmarks for the task, for a specific language, or for a specific age range of children assessed with the measure. CLI’s validation efforts are ongoing and formal benchmarks will be added as they become available.
Color-coded benchmarks in the assessment indicate the following:
Green/Light Green – the child meets the benchmark and is ON TRACK
Orange/Yellow – the child does not meet the benchmark and should be MONITORED
Red/Pink – the child does not meet the benchmark and NEEDS SUPPORT
Blue/Light Blue – there are no benchmarks available for the child’s age range and is considered OUT OF RANGE
