CPM: For the Rhyming measure, why is it a yes or no question?

 Answer

The yes/no format for the Rhyming measure has been a topic of debate for years. The main reason for this format is the floor effect observed in the Rhyme Production task, where many children received scores of zero, making the measure less useful, especially at the beginning of the year (BOY). The Rhyme Identification tasks (yes/no) did not exhibit such severe floor effects and, despite the “guess factor,” were just as highly correlated with outcome measures as the Rhyme Production measure. Therefore, we opted for the Yes/No version as it is somewhat easier for children.

We are currently piloting new items to address this issue. The CPM PA pilot includes tasks such as: “This is a dog (picture), and here is a frog (picture), cat (picture), boat (picture), and shoe (picture). Point to the picture that rhymes with ‘dog’.”

We are aware of the challenges with the Rhyming measures and are actively working on improvements.

Thank you for your understanding and patience as we strive to enhance our assessment tools.
