TX-KEA: Why is the TX-KEA Literacy Screener only available for Wave 1 and not Waves 2 or 3?
Answer
An assessment is an ongoing process that includes observation and provides information about development over time. However, a screener gives a “snapshot” of whether the child's development is on track.
Therefore, LEAs are to use the information from the screener to make instructional decisions regarding assessment moving forward. As time passes during the school year, students benefit from comprehensive progress monitoring over initial screening since their knowledge has grown and developed to demonstrate more complex skills.
HB3 required that all LEAs adopt a literacy screener to be administered in Kindergarten during the BOY window. In response to this, CLI created the Literacy Screener portion of TX-KEA to meet the needs of legislation.
