During the observation
During the additional 30 minute “observation clean up time”:
If materials are not visible, ask the teacher to look at materials.
Conduct the teacher interview during a less active time.
Keep your phone in your bag. Wear a watch instead to be able to tell the time. And keep track of the observation period.
Remember to keep a neutral facial expression during the observation.
Avoid the halo / horns effect.
Avoid interacting with the teacher during the observation (remember to introduce yourself when entering the classroom and explain the purpose of the visit. At the end of the observation, let them know that you are done with the observation and inform them that you might need to return for 30 minutes to observe the environment (indoor and outdoor).
Avoid interacting with the children.
Stay within visual and hearing distance from the teacher and children.
Note the environment items while still listening to the teacher, but remember there is an additional 30 min. If needed.
Take note of all environment items before you leave the classroom, if possible. Otherwise inform the teacher that you will be returning (use note-taking form).
Tally items that cover low frequency behaviors and behaviors observed.
Note only what you see and hear.
Remember that the notes are the evidence for your scores. Add comments for all measures scored.
Do not provide feedback – explain that the Lead Assessor will schedule a debrief meeting with the mentor to provide details of the assessment within 2 business days of finalizing the assessment. The director will meet with the mentor to review the assessment results.
Before leaving the classroom, inform the teacher that the observation has concluded. Thank the teacher when you are done.
